Okay, the key is the retainers, if you lube the retainers too, it helps a helluva lot! This time I used SD-20. My nut is plastic (god that sounded wrong!) and I was thinking of putting in a chrome nut (thats right I got nuts of steel! ), do they make one?

yes they make them. You can even have a floyd nut put on it, but just use it as a nut. Dont lock the strings down.

Yeah, I bought a floyd, and changed my mind.

It's still not staying in tune, bare in mind that I play pretty damn hard! But still, it shouldn't go out of tune. Again, whats the deal?

I found a little trick to get more sustain out of a strat. If you are using a Fender trem, you do not have to use all 6 mounting screws if you don't want too. I use 4, one on each side, and 2 in the middle. I have heard of prople using only 2, it is completely up to you.

I've got a problem. I was replacing the tuners on my strat and I lost one of the string retainers. So, being the cheap SOB that I am, I installed a Floyd retainer on it, and now I can't get the intonation right all the way up the neck. On the G string on the 5th fret thru the 21rst fret the intonation is okay. The other strings are okay, it's just the G string.

Also, I need a set of nut files, where can I get some?

Check with those big mail order suppliers in the US they should have all those parts.

Did you try a dremel tool? they have hundreds of different bits for them.

I'm afraid to try a dremel tool because I may take too much off.
Plus, I'm out of cut-off bits.

But, I could try a hack saw and a vice.

I'd google it before trying anything. There's 10 pages of links under guitar nut installation.

Ron is my google. I asked him and he hasn't responded to it yet.

I've got a friend that does work on guitars, maybe he can fix it for me.

In most cases involving intonation, removing the string retainer is not the solution to the problem, but in this case it was.

Problem solved!

Good to hear! I remember a long time ago having a similar problem with my Pre there was a horrible buzz or somethin' and it went away when one of the strings was shimed at the nut I just ended up going with heaviest gauged strings I could find. I sort of made a hybrid set with the heaviest E avail, a heavy A, med D, and a light G. This saved having to fix the nut.

Yeah dude.

I took off the string retainer and took some 120 grit sandpaper to the nut (I took off less than 1/64"), put some Ernie's on 'em and now he sings!
